Landeen Family, New Sweden, ca. 1890
New Sweden Historical Society
My great grandmother Annie came from Sweden when she was six in 1895. She was born in 1889. She came by boat and she celebrated her birthday at sea. When she came to New Sweden it was her and her uncle. Later her mom joined them. Her mom's name was Johanna Johanson, before she married Nilis Finberg. She first settled by Elis Lund on the Madawaska Road. After a couple of years her mother remarried to Mr. Lund. When Annie got married to Hjelmer Landeen she was 18 and he was 28. They were married at their own house where my grandmother still lives.
My great grandmother Annie died December 13, 1983 at the age of 94. She had 54 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Her children were: five sons: Cliford, Elmer, Maurice, Floyd, and Milton; and five daughters: May Baily, Louise Anderson, Irma Rouse, Arlen Dickinson, and Ninnie Zetterman.
My great grandfather Andrew (Anders) Gelmer (Hjelmer) Landeen was one of the biggest men most people had ever seen. He started farm business and doing so was a very rugged man. When you ask about him most people would call him a gentle giant; he got that name because he was so big and strong, but he loved kids and he never got in a fight. When people would talk about him, he would say that he was the strongest man that they ever new. They would tell the story of how he could lift a rail road axle and turn it all the way around by himself.
